“The myrtle trees in the hollow” (Zechariah 1:8)
The vision in this chapter describes the condition of Israel in Zechariah’s day; but we can apply it to the Church of God. God resides among the myrtle trees in the hollow, and His angels are working for His Church. “These are the ones whom the LORD has sent to walk to and fro throughout the earth” (Zechariah 1:10).
God is always involved in world affairs, but His activities are usually sensed only by His saints. This is because “the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God … because they are spiritually discerned … but we have the mind of Christ” (1 Corinthians 2:14–16).
In Bible times, the myrtle wreath was awarded to winners of competitions, and worn by Roman generals in victory processions. Even though it’s not visible to the world, the Church is always victorious, especially when saints are ridiculed and martyred for their faith. In times of spiritual awakening, the Church is roused to action, so the world can see what’s been hidden. The Holy Spirit quickens closet Christians to assert what is most important to them…the love and Blessed Hope of Jesus Christ.
The myrtle tree doesn’t shed her leaves, she’s always green; and the Church, especially in the worst of times, loves her unchanging Bridegroom, who sustains her. She is most beautiful when she stands up for Him, even unto death. Isn’t every Christian more than a conqueror through Christ who loved him?
“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven” (Matthew 5:10–12).
