“Who became for us wisdom from God” (1 Corinthians 1:30)

Ever since Adam ate from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, every human being is born with a fallen nature. “Through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned … by the one man’s offense many died, much more the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abounded to many” (Romans 5:12–15). This is the Good News, the Gospel. The problem of Original Sin has been solved by Christ, who became for us wisdom from God.

But man’s intellect seeks after rest, and by nature seeks it apart from the Lord Jesus Christ. Men of education are apt, even when converted, to look upon the simplicities of the cross of Christ with skepticism instead of simple faith. They are snared in philosophy and reject the revelation of the Bible, and depart from the simple truth of Christ crucified, and invent, more intellectual explanations.

Many ministers in Charles Spurgeon’s day ate from a tree called the Downgrade of Theology. This tree has unfortunately grown, so today, most mainline Protestant denominations have split into two camps. One camp still believes the Bible is true, while the other denies what God has said, which is why I call the Tree, “HAS GOD SAID?”. Its three branches question three foundational truths: 1) The Atonement, 2) The Existence of Hell, and 3) The Exclusivity of Heaven.

If the Bible isn’t true, what Christ said about Heaven and Hell and His sacrifice mean nothing. But if the Bible is true, then what Christ said is true.

“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6). “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits” (Matthew 7:15–16).
