“Into Your hand I commit my spirit; You have redeemed me, O Lord God of truth” (Psalms 31:5)

This prayer, or one like it, is common for people who have known God, when they know they are soon to leave Earth. The most important thing to a saint, in life and death, isn’t the condition of his body or his possessions, but his eternal soul. The saint knows, “whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the Gospel's will save it. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?  Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?” (Mark 8:35-37).

What is this mortal state compared with the soul? When a saint commits his soul to Christ, he knows it came from Him, and soon, will return to Him, for “the spirit will return to God who gave it” (Ecclesiastes 12:7). The One who kept it on Earth, will receive it into Heaven. As the Apostle Paul said, “I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him until that Day” (2 Timothy 1:12).

At all times we should commit everything into Christ’s faithful hand; our soul shall dwell at ease, and delight itself in quiet resting places. Past deliverances give us confidence in trials. What the Lord’s done before, He’ll do again, for He never changes.

"Though Thou slay me I will trust, Praise Thee even from the dust, Prove, and tell it as I prove, Thine unutterable love. Thou mayst chasten and correct, But Thou never canst neglect; Since the ransom price is paid, On Thy love my hope is stay'd."
