“Stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord” (Exodus 14:13)
This is what God tells you to do after you’ve done everything He’s asked you to do. You’ve disciplined your body and brought it into submission (1 Corinthians 9:27). You’ve put to death the deeds of your body by the power of the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:13). You’ve “put off the Old Man with his deeds, and have put on the New Man” (Colossians 3:9), and now, the big test comes.
There will be times when the only way to stay faithful to Christ is to not go forward, backward, right or left. He tells you, "Stand still." This is the moment when you find out if you’ve learned how to stay submitted to Christ no matter what Satan throws at you. “By your patience possess your souls” (Luke 21:18). The Greek word translated “patience” is Hupomone, which means “stay under”. For the Christian, the verse means, “By staying submitted to the Lordship of Christ, you keep your souls”. The flesh yells “run” and the Old Man advises, “return to your addictions”, but your New Man says, “stay submitted to Christ”.
Despair says, “Do something, before it’s too late!" He wants you to take matters into your own hands, which is really into the hands of Satan. Presumption boasts, "march into the sea and expect a miracle." Faith doesn’t listen to either Presumption or Despair, but to Christ, who says, "Stand still". “The testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith” (James 1:3-6), expecting God to show you a way to stay submitted to the Lordship of Christ as He walks with you through the trial.
