“Search the Scriptures” (John 5:39)
The Greek word translated “search” signifies a strict, close, diligent, curious search, such as men make when they want to go to Heaven. Christ said, “You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me” (John 5:39). The Word of Eternal Life is in the Scriptures.
Salvation isn’t just believing the Word once, but a continual process of letting the Word grow and bear fruit in you. The Apostle James says, “Receive with meekness the implanted Word, which is able to save your souls. But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves” (James 1:21-22). The Apostle Paul says something similar: “Brethren, I declare to you the Gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that Word which I preached to you — unless you believed in vain”
(1 Corinthians 15:1-2)
Yes, it’s possible to deceive yourself and believe in vain. That’s why Christ warned in the parable of the soils about the four types of believers. They all accepted the Word, but only one of the four allowed the Word to grow and bear fruit, the Biblical evidence of salvation
( Matthew 13:18-23).
That’s why Christ told us the parable of the house built on rock. The man who builds on rock, “hears these sayings of Mine, and does them”, he will be saved from destruction. The man who builds on sand, “hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them”, he won’t be saved from destruction (Matthew 7:24-27).
So build your house on reading and doing the Word of Christ. Allow the Word to grow and bear fruit in you. Develop the habit of daily reading His Word. God forbid that our Bibles witness against us on Judgement Day.
