“He humbled Himself” (Philippians 2:8)
Jesus is your example of perfect humility and obedience. Even though everything was created through and for Him (Colossians 1:16), He said, “the Father who sent Me gave Me a command, what I should say and what I should speak” (John 12:49). Even though He’s the King of kings, He said, “the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do” (John 5:19). True humility comes when you realize your utter dependence on God.
Christ said, “He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing” (John 15:5). Christ is the perfect example of humility and obedience. “In the days of His flesh …He learned obedience by the things which He suffered. And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him” (Hebrews 5:7-10). Follower of Christ, will you humble yourself and obey Him, as He obeyed the Father?
A sense of Christ's amazing love can sometimes humble saints more than feelings of guilt. Stand at the foot of the cross, and count the bloody drops by which you were cleansed; look at His crown of thorns; His raw meat shoulders, ripped open by the Roman lash; His hands and feet nailed through, His whole self, humbled with spit, mockery and scorn; see the throes of inward grief, showing themselves in His outward appearance and His shriek, "My God, my God, why have You forsaken Me?" If you don’t lie prostrate on the ground before that cross, you’ve probably never seen it: if you’re not humbled in the presence of Jesus’ suffering, you probably don’t know Him.
“Everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted” (Luke 18:14). “Humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you” (1 Peter 5:6-7).
