“Good Teacher” (Matthew 19:16)

The young man called Christ “good teacher”, because he didn’t know Him. He’s our everything. “For we ourselves were also once foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful and hating one another. But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior, that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life” (Titus 3:3-7).

Now we know from experience why the Apostle Paul warned saints, “Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ. For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power” (Colossians 2:8-10).

We had nothing to do with our salvation. “By grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast”. (Ephesians 2:8-9). He’s been good to us in all our needs, trials, struggles, and sorrows. And He couldn’t be a better Lord, for His service is freedom, His rule is love: and we wish we could be one thousandth as good a servant as He is Lord. When He teaches us, He isn’t harsh or condescending, His Spirit is gentleness itself. His instruction is pure truth, and all His teachings lead to goodness. So yes, He is a Good Teacher.
