“I will be their God, And they shall be My people” (2 Corinthians 6:16)
In these words there’s the idea of special concern and affection. Because of what Christ did, we’re now His covenant people: for all “those who are of faith are blessed with believing Abraham” (Galatians 3:29). “Christ ... having become a curse for us (for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree"), that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:13-14). So now, we’re included in all the covenant promises to God’s people. “For the Lord's portion is His people ... His inheritance” (Deuteronomy 32:9). We are His inheritance!
All the nations upon earth are His; the whole world is in His power; but we are His inheritance, the ones He blesses with His Kingdom. Because of Christ, one day in heaven, we’ll sing, “You are worthy to take the scroll, And to open its seals; For You were slain, And have redeemed us to God by Your blood Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation, And have made us kings and priests to our God; And we shall reign on the earth” (Revelation 5:9-10).
Dear friend, can you, by faith, see yourself in that number? If you’re saved, you can look up to heaven and say, "My Lord and my God, You are mine. Mine by the Spirit of adoption by whom I cry out, "Abba, Father” (Romans 8:15); mine by the precious blood of Christ that speaks in my behalf (Hebrews 12:24); mine by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8). Can you lay hold of Jesus' garments, and say, "My Christ"? If you can, then God says of you, and of others like you, "My people”; for, if God is your God, and Christ is your Christ, the Lord has a special affection for you, and you are His chosen possession, His inheritance, accepted in His beloved Son.
