“The king himself also crossed over the Brook Kidron” (2 Samuel 15:23)

David’s son Absalom conspired against him, and was soon to enter Jerusalem with his army of traitors. David’s crossing the brook Kidron, meant the temporary loss of earthly comfort and security. The man after God’s own heart wasn’t exempt from trouble ... his life was full of it. He was both the Lord's Anointed, and the Lord's Afflicted. Why then, should you expect to be treated any different?

“Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you ... if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in this matter ... let those who suffer according to the will of God commit their souls to Him in doing good, as to a faithful Creator” (1 Peter 4:12-19).

Christ also, was “a Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief” (Isaiah 53:3). It’s a comfort to know, in all ways He was tempted as you are. Faithless friends, slanderous attacks, death threats, physical afflictions, all these He suffered. But it’s even more comforting to know, He is, at this moment, in a position to help you with your trouble. “For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:15-16).

Just as David returned to Jerusalem, and Christ now sits on His throne, your trial will soon be over. The big question, is whether you’ll come out of it as an overcomer or a victim. The answer depends on whether you feel sorry for yourself, or look to Christ. “Let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith” (Hebrews 12:1-2).
