“So they rose up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem … And they told about the things that had happened on the road, and how He was known to them” (Luke 24:33-35)
Two disciples of Jesus were travelling to a small village seven miles from Jerusalem. As they went, they discussed the amazing events following the crucifixion of their Master. They were joined by a stranger who asked, “What kind of conversation is this that you have with one another as you walk and are sad?" They told Him, "Jesus of Nazareth, who was a Prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered Him to be condemned to death, and crucified Him. But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, today is the third day since these things happened. Yes, and certain women of our company, who arrived at the tomb early, astonished us. When they did not find His body, they came saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who said He was alive. And certain of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but Him they did not see” (Luke 24:15-24).
Notice, they didn’t hold anything back from the stranger. They didn’t embellish or spiritualize it. They just told what they knew. The stranger explained many things from the Scriptures, things the other disciples needed to be told. They were tired when they reached the village, so they stopped for the night. When they sat down to eat, the stranger blessed and broke the bread, and their eyes were opened, and they knew it was Jesus. Their weariness forgotten, they started back to Jerusalem to tell the Good News to the Church. They had precious information to share! When they got there, the disciples were already talking about more appearances of Christ.
This evening, let their example impress us deeply. They were so excited, they forgot their feet and walked seven miles in the dark! They gossiped the Gospel as much as they preached it! We must also “gossip” what God’s done for us. John's account of the resurrection needed to be supplemented by Peter; and Mary could speak of something further still; combined, we have a full testimony. We each have our own intimate details of how Christ set us free from a particular addiction or sin that dogged us all our lives. Testimonies are the way the Body of Christ increases and is edified.
Share your spiritual treasure. Speak what you know, and testify to what you’ve seen. “Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching” (2 Timothy 4:2).
