“Afterward” (Hebrews 12:11)

How happy are tried Christians … after the trial. “Celebrations only take place after great victories. “Though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 1:6-7). At least half of the Scriptures in the New Testament that deal with salvation refer to the Blessed Hope, when “In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye … we shall be changed” (1 Corinthians 15:52).

The knowledge that one day we’ll no longer have to suffer through trials is the “secret weapon” that enables us to endure them. “For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory” (2 Corinthians 4:17). “That I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death, if, by any means, I may attain to the resurrection from the dead” (Philippians 3:10-11). “Who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again … to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you” (1 Peter 1:3-4). “Knowing that He who raised up the Lord Jesus will also raise us up with Jesus” (2 Corinthians 4:10).

While we wait for the Blessed Hope, we should have a Biblically sanctioned mindset. “We also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope” (Romans 5:3-4). “Count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing” (James 1:2-4). “Let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith” (Galatians 6:9-10).

Who wouldn’t bear the present cross for the crown which comes afterwards? But this calls for patience, for rest is not for today, nor triumph for the present, but "afterward." Wait, Oh my soul, and let patience have her perfect work.
