“And he said, ‘Thus says the Lord: 'Make this valley full of ditches.’ For thus says the Lord: ‘You shall not see wind, nor shall you see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, so that you, your cattle, and your animals may drink’” (2 Kings 3:16-17)

The armies of Judah, Israel’s Northern Kingdom, and Edom were allied in an expedition to defeat the army of Moab. After seven days with no water, the faithless King of Israel despaired that God had brought them to this desperate state to allow Moab to destroy them. They asked Elisha the prophet what they should do, and they obeyed the Word of the Lord, and dug the ditches. The next morning, water flowed from Edom, and filled the ditches, and when the morning sun reflected on the water, the army of Moab thought they saw blood everywhere. They said, “This is blood; the kings have surely struck swords and have killed one another; now therefore, Moab, to the spoil!” (2 Kings 3:20). When they rushed in, they were defeated.

This miracle came after the three kings had exhausted all human effort. Only then did they seek the Lord. But to their credit, they obeyed the Word of God. But, asking God for a miracle was not enough. 1) They had faith God would send water. 2) They had to dig ditches. 3) They had to fight Moab to the death.

You must prepare for divine blessings. You must expect God to come through. You must never give up, but believe God will give you what you need, when you need it, to do His will. The Lord has His own sovereign ways of orchestrating events. Our job is to obey, to the best of our ability, with the help of the indwelling Holy Spirit, what we know He wants us to do. Do you need a miracle to stop sinning? Seek God. Obey His Word. Put to death the flesh. “If by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God” (Romans 8:13-14).
