“He will gather the lambs with His arm, And carry them in His bosom” (Isaiah 40:11)

THE GOOD SHEPHERD carries the lambs in His bosom. The sighs, the ignorance, the feebleness of the little ones of His flock draw forth His compassion. As the faithful High Priest, he considers the weak. Besides that, since He purchased them with His blood, He cares for them as His property, and they’re part of His glory and reward. He’s responsible for each lamb, bound by His covenant not to lose one (John 6:39).

In what way does He carry them? Sometimes He “carries” them by cutting a trial short. “God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it” (1 Corinthians 10:13).

Often lambs are "carried" by being filled with an unusual degree of love, so they can endure suffering and not lose hope. “Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us” (Romans 5:3).

Some are “carried” by the knowledge of Christ. “His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him” (2 Peter 1:3).

Frequently, He "carries" them by giving them a very simple faith, which enables them to take His promises at face value, so when trouble comes, they run straight to Christ. The simplicity of their faith gives them an unusual degree of confidence, which carries them above the world. “God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise” (1 Corinthians 1:26).

In Christ’s bosom, they’re safe. Christ warned, “whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to sin, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were drowned in the depth of the sea” (Matthew18:6).
