“God, our own God” (Psalms 67:6)
It’s tragic we don’t use the talents God gives us to their fullest capacity, but it’s even more tragic we don’t rely on God, moment-by-moment. Most saints can go for hours not thinking about God until they get into trouble. It’s not God’s fault they call on Him only when they’re desperate. Unlike demons, the Holy Spirit doesn’t impose Himself on the saint. He’s a gentleman. He waits for you to approach Him. According to the Bible, the normal conscious state of the saint is supposed to be “righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit” (Romans 14:17). Apparently, most saints today keep God at a distance. This is not Biblically sanctioned. Few saints actively “pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness” and don’t know what it means to “Fight the good fight of faith” (1 Timothy 6:11-12).
Learn the divine skill of involving God in everything you do. Of course, you’ll have to be OK with His looking over your shoulder. Is that a problem? If it is, then that’s most likely the reason you don’t want to be conscious of His presence…you don’t want to feel guilty.
If you don’t want a moment-by-moment awareness of God, don’t be surprised if you drift away from Him, and get into trouble. With the thousands of entertainments and distractions of the media, it will take a great deal of discipline to return to your first love, but it will be worth it. Walking the fence is the way of the coward.
“I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth ... buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see. As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent” (Revelation 3:15-19).
