“Awake, O north wind, And come, O south! Blow upon my garden, That its spices may flow out” (Song of Solomon 4:16)
The wind is often used in the Bible as a metaphor for the movement of the Holy Spirit. “And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting ... And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit” (Acts 2:2-4).
The woman in this passage is understood to be the church, asking the Wind to release mysterious fragrances from her garden to please her Lover. How wonderful, “the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us” (Romans 5:1), “The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God” (Romans 8:15-17).
How wonderful that God has placed in us the Comforter to help us please Christ. “Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God” (Romans 8:26-27). “Oh Wind, please release the fragrances that will please my Lover”.
