“I will strengthen you” (Isaiah 41:10)

God can do whatever He wants. He can allow sinners to go from bad to worse, or in the case of saints, He can help them see the Truth about themselves, and according to His schedule, save them. If you know you’re a sinner, God’s already helped you know that fact, but until He saves you, you need to keep seeking Him. You won’t have power over sin until He supernaturally changes your heart and indwells you with the Holy Spirit. When God saves you, your new heart will want to please God more than yourself, and the indwelling Holy Spirit will give you the strength to die to sin and obey His commands.

Supernatural regeneration of the heart. “Unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God … That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit” (John 3:3-6). “He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit” (Titus 3:5). “Having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible” (1 Peter 1:23). “Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God” (1 John 3:9).

Indwelling of the Holy Spirit. “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit … you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His ... if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you” (Romans 8:1-11).

So, if you have no power over sin, and you know it, that’s good news! It means God has shown you the Truth. Keep seeking Him. And if you’re saved, you have the power to obey God through Christ who strengthens you (Philippians 4:13).
