“If anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous” (1 John 2:1)

Yes, saints sometimes sin, but when they sin, Christ doesn’t leave them, and they don’t forfeit His help. In fact, if you give in to temptation, you need to quickly repent and run to Christ. If you had run to Christ when you were tempted, you wouldn’t have sinned, but even now, if you repent and run to Christ, He will restore you before more fiery darts can strike. As long as your shield of faith is down, things will get worse for you (Ephesians 6:16).

All the sin that a believer ever did, or will be allowed by God to commit in the future, cannot destroy his inheritance in the Lord Jesus Christ, as his Advocate.

“Jesus”, means “Jehovah Saves”. “Therefore, He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them” (Hebrews 7:25).

Next, “Christ” means “anointed”. He is anointed of God to be the High Priest, to plead in our behalf. If He were chosen by man, He would fail, but because He’s chosen of God, He can’t fail.

Next, He is “the Righteous”. “He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him” (2 Corinthians 5:21). Christ, the Righteous One, stands in our place, so we can be declared righteous.

So if you stumble, remember, “we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:15–16).

If you sin willfully, you’re not saved (Hebrews 10:26). For more on this subject, click here.
