“I was so foolish and ignorant; I was like a beast before You” (Psalms 73:21)
Envy can blind saints to the truth about sinners. “My feet had almost stumbled; My steps had nearly slipped. For I was envious of the boastful, When I saw the prosperity of the wicked … They are not in trouble as other men, Nor are they plagued like other men … Surely I have cleansed my heart in vain, And washed my hands in innocence. For all day long I have been plagued, And chastened every morning” (Psalms 73:2-14).
Fortunately, by the end of the Psalm, this saint came to his senses. “Until I went into the sanctuary of God; Then I understood their end. Surely You set them in slippery places; You cast them down to destruction. Oh, how they are brought to desolation, as in a moment! They are utterly consumed with terrors” (Psalms 73:17-19).
Even if it were true, (which it isn’t), that sinners enjoy life on Earth more that saints, where they spend eternity is infinitely more important. For every second saints endure on Earth, they’ll enjoy over 10,000 years in Heaven. The opposite is true of sinners. So don’t envy sinners. Try to help them come to a knowledge of the truth so they can avoid Hell.
“Then the King will say to those on His right hand, ‘Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world’ …Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels’” (Matthew 25:34-41).
