“He who has clean hands and a pure heart, Who has not lifted up his soul to an idol, Nor sworn deceitfully” (Psalms 24:4)

Outward signs of holiness are expected of people who are saved. Unfortunately, many people pervert the doctrine of justification by faith and treat good works with contempt; as if good works were the opposite of saving faith, rather than Biblical evidence of it. “In this the children of God and the children of the devil are manifest: Whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God” (1 John 3:10). “For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments” (1 John 5:1).

The Apostle James was speaking to saints when he said, “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded (James 4:8). Saints shouldn’t worship idols. All men lift up their souls to things that please them, but saints shouldn’t pursue pleasure for its own sake. The Christian loves the things of God, and stays well-within the sanctioned pleasures of marriage, honor, and duty. “Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge … be content with such things as you have” (Hebrews 13:4-5). “Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers …will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God” (1 Corinthians 6:9-11).

Finally, saints shouldn’t lie. Lies belong to the old life before you were saved. “Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the Old Man with his deeds” (Colossians 3:8).
“Put off, concerning your former conduct, the Old Man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and that you put on the New Man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness. Do Not Grieve the Spirit. Therefore, putting away lying” (Ephesians 4:22-25).
