““And now why take the road to Egypt, To drink the waters of Sihor?” (Jeremiah 2:18)
The Nile river was called Sihor. To drink Egypt’s water was symbolic of seeking the pleasures of Egypt’s god’s. God told them, “Your own wickedness will correct you, And your backslidings will rebuke you” (Jeremiah 2:19). “My people would not heed My voice, And Israel would have none of Me. So I gave them over to their own stubborn heart, To walk in their own counsels. Oh, that My people would listen to Me, That Israel would walk in My ways! I would soon subdue their enemies, And turn My hand against their adversaries” (Psalms 81:11-14).
What can we learn from backslidden Israel? If you’ve tasted Christ’s Living Waters, “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world - the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life - is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever” (1 John 2:15-17).
If you’ve had the love of God poured in your heart by the Holy Spirit who was given to you, don’t trifle with the amusements of Satan. “Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? … he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him … do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's” (1 Corinthians 6:15-20).
