“Then Israel sang this song: ‘Spring up, O well! All of you sing to it’” (Numbers 21:17)
During their pilgrimage in the Wilderness, God miraculously provided water to Israel by having Moses speak to a rock, or tap a rock with his rod to make the water flow, but this time, Moses had the seventy Elders use their rods to dig down to get the water to flow.
When God first saved you, He miraculously gave you Living Waters. You obeyed Christ and a miracle happened: “‘He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’ But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive” (John 7:37-39). But now, perhaps, the spring doesn’t flow as it should. When you were first born of the Holy Spirit, the love of God was poured out in your heart by the Holy Spirit who was given to you (Romans 5:5), but perhaps now, the love doesn’t flow as you’d like. But you have a choice.
The Water is still there ... all you have to do, is dig. Don’t just live on the memory of how things used to be. God’s given you the grace to dig deep. Reading the Word of God is the primary way the Holy Spirit reveals Christ to you (Ephesians 3:18-19), and reading the Word washes you (Ephesians 5:25), and helps you see the corruption that God wants to remove (Hebrews 4:12-13).
This evening, start the habit of reading Scripture as if your life depends on it...because it does. Just as the seventy Elders had to dig with their rods, because they had nothing better to dig with, you might have to start digging with poor reading skills. If you’re not used to reading, just read 5 minutes a day. If you read Scripture 5 minutes a day, for six weeks, you’ll develop a lifetime habit which will keep your relationship with Christ like your first love. All the means of grace are important. Prayer, going to church, listening to sermons, doing devotions and eating the Lord’s Supper are all important, but reading Scripture is the primary way God feeds, corrects and directs you. Of all the means of grace, reading the Word of God is one over which you have complete control. You decide how much grace you want.
