“The Lord is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear?” (Psalms 27:1)
This confidence comes when God regenerates the heart and fills with the Holy Spirit. For the saint, the Lord doesn’t just give light, He IS Light; the Lord doesn’t just save, He IS Salvation. All sinners have the light of common grace, but saints “are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light ... finding out what is acceptable to the Lord. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them” (Ephesians 5:8-11). For saints, light is no longer an academic idea...it’s a state of being. Saints no longer avoid the light...it’s their identity.
There’s a lot of confusion over whether someone can know things about God and still be lost. The Bible is clear that all sinners know God after a fashion. “What may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them” (Romans 1:19). The Apostle Paul identifies the knowledge of sinners as “soulish knowledge”, while saints also have “spiritual knowledge”. “The natural (soulish) man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. But he who is spiritual judges all things ... we have the mind (understanding) of Christ” (1 Corinthians 2:14-16).
God is our joy, comfort, guide, teacher, and in every sense our light: He is light within, light around, light reflected from us, and light revealed to us. That’s why the saint can say, "Whom shall I fear?" The powers of darkness are no match for the Lord, He is our Light; the fear of hell is no match for the Lord, He is our Salvation.
“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:14-16).
